Description
The overall media landscape in Malaysia and the wider Southeast Asia region has seen a rise in internal and external disinformation. The extensive reach of social media, combined with the publication of clickbait news online along with a general lack of media literacy skills has increased the impact and difficulties posed by this challenge. To counter disinformation, the creation of quality, non-biased content, and the provision of media literacy skills to the general public are key to enabling citizens to critically evaluate the information they receive. On that note, TechCamp Malaysia aims to train and motivate journalists to produce data-driven, non-biased reporting to counter false narratives. TechCamp Malaysia also aims to inspire social media, community, and government influencers with the tools to inculcate media literacy skills among the wider public. Throughout the two-week virtual program, participants will work with technologists and international experts to develop tech-based solutions to the challenges at hand.
