Description
Tackling disinformation and misinformation, and cultivating media literacy have emerged as a shared priority for both the United States and Timor-Leste.
TechCamp Dili’s approach to countering disinformation is to cultivate local voices that are capable of identifying and publicly challenging dis/misinformation in the local media landscape. TechCamp Dili will increase the digital capacity of established and aspiring journalists, media professionals, and influencers; and empower them to use their platforms to improve public media literacy and reduce the reach and impact of disinformation and misinformation. It will also cultivate and sustain collaborative networks among these actors to increase their individual capacity and create community resilience, which, in turn, will create a collective space for them to share and address common challenges.
To have a greater impact TechCamp Dili will engage journalists and young influential voices. Journalists are critical players in the war against disinformation and misinformation, but lack professional development opportunities in Timor-Leste. Training the next generation of journalists and media influencers will help break the cycle of spreading disinformation and misinformation.
