Professional Engagement Manager, News Literacy Project

Miriam Romais is the News Literacy Project’s professional engagement manager, combining her extensive experience as a leader in the nonprofit world with a lifelong commitment to advocating for visual literacy, education and equity.

Before joining NLP in 2018, she worked for with the Center for Photography at Woodstock in Woodstock, New York, advising on outreach and strategic development projects. She previously spent more than two decades at En Foco Inc., a nonprofit in the Bronx, New York, where she served as executive director from 2005 to 2014, and was publisher/editor of its Nueva Luz photographic journal focusing on work photographers of Latinx, African, Asian and Native American/Pacific Islander heritage. During her tenure, Nueva Luz won three Ippie Awards and received four Lucie Award nominations for the best photography magazine of the year.

Miriam graduated from Rutgers University with a BFA in documentary photography with studies in cultural anthropology. Her personal documentary work has been awarded grants and has been exhibited in museums and galleries throughout the U.S. and abroad, including El Museo del Barrio, the Museum of the City of New York and the Smithsonian Institution. She holds an MBA from the State University of New York/Empire State College along with a certificate in Global Brand Management.
